Mircea Eliade, Victor Turner and Paul Ricoeur provide the theoretical framework for congregational change, tested through direct observation, congergational focus groups, a survey, and interviews. Findings indicated that metanarratives are effective vehicles for conveying and shaping the church's values and identity, serving a corrective and evaluative function, renewing and healing. Through guided interviews and assessment grids, I have discovered that churches, even older churches, may see God working through them as they examine their stories. By sharing these stories and recognizing their signs and symptoms, they can come a better understanding of themselves, their identity, and their mission. The author organized and led the related practical project with was a series of reflection sessions on the characteristics of New Testament Community and how these informed what it means 'to be' the Church today. the related preaching for Sunday worship concurrent with these reflection sessions was on the Bible as story in the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospels of Mark. Saarinen and its author's subsequent suggestion for revitalization. In so doing, she hopes to discover 1) the congregation's kairos moments, 2) implications for present and future ministries, and 3) how her ministerial gifts can best be used. The project necessarily explored the difference between 'chronos' history and 'kairos' history and the definition of 'testimony' and 'witness' in terms of Post-modern Christianity and 'exile' images. The congregation was interviewed and surveyed in both group and individual settings over a period of 2 1/2 years by both an interim pastor and the new pastor. The subjective data gathered was explored along with recurring themes from the pastor's journal.
