However, Jesus' intention for his disciples was to be a 'people who' embodied the gospel.  This project identifies the dominant scripts guiding many congregations, suggesting an alternative script including being a contrast society, participating in the mission dei, living as disciples, and understanding ourselves as 'family members' in the household of God. That is the setting of this project.  Based on interiviews, photographs, and case studies with Knox Presbyterian Church's attempts at practicing hospitality with its neighborhood, this project demonstrates the 'proslambano' in Romans 14-15: that welcoming the strangers of the neighborhood, and the church inviting themselves into the homes of their neighbors as servants, liberates both to experience God's reconciling love. This will shape the identity, mission, and life of the Christian congregations who do so. Through the use of an ethnographical approach, the project unearths the challenges of four families who are dealing the ASDs and posits that there are educational and faith based steps that Christian congregations can use to assist families similarly situated. The author preached for two years in a congregation where the relational system of evil worked to weaken the preacher's relationship with the congregation and the unity of the congregation. Various styles of preaching were employed by the preacher. The topic of evil was directly addressed in sermons. The author measured the results by polling listeners anonymously, interviewing specific listeners and discerning if the congregation was living out its faith during that time. Through data gathered in surveys and focus groups, correlated to current biblical, theological and economic thought, I outline what the gospel has to say and how the gospel might be preached in a culture of affluence so that people are receptive to hearing the message. Through the implementation of classes, a prayer team and opportunities for lay involvement with prayer ministry the desired effect was a strengthening of the congregation's relationship to God and others and the laity would become more confident in their ability to serve along with the clergy. The content of the seminary focused on excellence and quality in local church ministry. Surveys were used to measure the effectiveness on a church receiving the training and compare it to one which did not receive the training. Regular attenders, local ministry leaders, and guests participated in the survey process. The issues of excellence, quality, and customer service in both the corporate and church worlds were examined in literature as a background for the study. The research team developed a survey to assess the presence of eight health characteristics: intentional evangelism, mobilized laity, transforming discipleship, engaging worship, passionate spirituality, empowering leadership, authentic community, and effective structures. The health was then compared to particular indices of growth. A positive relationship between health and growth was discovered.
