It exposes and addresses the relationship between themes, issues and problems of the congregation.  The dissertation presupposes that the factions of the congregation are manifestations of factions in families that make up the membership.  The problems that are unresolved in families show up in interpersonal relationships in the church family.  The biblical narrative model used the favorite stories of a test group of caregivers, such as favorite Bible stories, favorite fairy tales and stories heard from visitations to discover disruptive themes in their personal narratives. The results of this dissertation answer, in part, the search of a pastor for ways to address the pastoral needs of four lay persons as these persons are being trained to give care to other members of the congregation. The method used is a case study of Memorial United Methodist Church, a congregation which committed itself to changing its racial composition.  The case study provides implications for other congregations attempting a similar re-creation as well as suggestions for various levels of the United Methodist connectional system. The model involves the pastor and a lay team in two sessions to identify the narrative of the church's story.  A survey solicits information and stories from a cross-section of the church membership.  The project showed positive results in that teams from four congregations participated and indicated that they did enjoy, relish and learn from the congregation's stories of life and faith and were helped to discover a number of factors which form a congregation's identity. Research was done into the theological basis for dealing with conflict.  Literature as well as in-person interviews of Unitarian historians were used to draw a record of how Unitarians and Universalists have dealt with conflicts in the past.  Extensive use of personal interviews was employed to gather information from leaders, lay and clergy, of the congregations targeted for the study. Typologies offer a structured way to analyze a congregation's identity.  Historical research and survey instruments create a way to evalute a congregation's identity. Workshops on past, present, and future, along with group discussions, develop a congregation's identity. The results of the study show that congregations can create an accepted body of knowledge about themselves. Its focus is not on what has changed or needs to change, but on the nature of change itself. Research methodology includes documentary and descriptive research. This paper documents how Covenant United Methodist Church engaged in such a study.  The plan chosen for Covenant to study congregational life included the use of such categories as identity, context, process, and program.  Data was obtained from adult and youth class discussions and from information gathered by distributing the 'parish profile inventory' to one-half of Covenant's membership.  A summary of all the data collected provides a portrait of Covenant UMC.  By examining and analyzing this portrait, one may better understand who Covenant is and what Covenant may desire to become. Knowing where a congregation is in its life cycle permits interventions to be made to alter its path.
