The purpose of this project is to suggest that churches place in their constitutions and bylaws an agreed-upon-in-advance procedure for conflict management and resolution.  By processing the potential for conflict and developing procedures to address it, valuable time and precious fellowship can be conserved. It explores the nature of congregation and the nature of grief.  It argues that congregations grieve as one.  It shows ways to identify that grief, and pictures the dynamics of three congregations in grief. A specific focus is put upon grief as expressed individually and corporately.  Research was done with individuals and the congregation as a whole.  A qualitative approach was used, blending the themes of grounded theory and participant observation.  Specific methods included a journal, conversational interviews, and liturgical services.  Positive results were gained from having individuals and the congregation deal purposefully with their grief rather than denying its reality. Friendship is a minor theme in Scripture and Christian history.  Jesus moves all disciples into friendship in the eschatological advance from servanthood. In the church's primary activity, its worship, commitment to friendship can satisfy people's need for intimacy and encourage a climate of hospitality. Research shows friendship is a theological expectation in Christian community. The project involved in-depth interviews with church members who had experienced significant crises in their church. By far the most significant unifying force for these groups was the fellowship of the congregation.
