In the United Church of Christ, the situation is complicatd by an historical no-intrusion policy called autonomy.  This prevents or at least delays any quality intervention.  The author uses his own experience, as well as other resources, to build a workable, creative model of strategies that is offered as a contribution to ministry.  It is at once therapeutic, but suggestive of preventative directions as well. The community of faith was by God's design to be an inclusive community.  The growing ethnic diversity in our society today presents a challenge to the local congregation to be intentional in its ministry to incorporate people of diverse cultural and racial experiences into its fellowship.  A congregation to be successful in building an inclusive ministry must first begin to value diversity as a gift of God.  The local congregation can begin to appreciate the ethnic diversity of its members as a gift of God through Bible study, small group sharing, and sermons. The group participants wrote and shared their life histories. From these personal narratives we discovered a common dramaturgical pattern within our congregation. The congregation needed to address this issue and the issue of continuing fit of the congregation's vision and the pastor's vision of ministry. A study focused on the congregation's identity by utilizing the narrative of the congregation.  The format of the study was a series of six sessions involving elders and committed members of the church.  It was hypothesized that reflecting on the church's journey of faith in its history could cause the congregation to ponder positive attributes and in turn bolster the congregation's self-esteem, hope, and energy, and contribute to a more responsible and effective expression of the congregation's faith commitments. Three theses with regard to future planning summarize the author's findings: the role of the pastor; authority and power for planning; and membership consensus of mission and future vision. It seeks to clarify why certain passages of scripture, namely, parables of Jesus, are interpreted differently.  The project makes use of four typologies designed to explore a limited interpretation of the Kingdom as found in the parables.  The method of approach is in the formation of two groups.  One group determines and evaluates the usefulness/integrity of the typologies.  The second group functions as an objective/reflective interpreter for the project. Through observation and reflection, participating pastors clarified and defined their perceptions of their churches.  They interpreted their observations through stories, characterizations, reflection upon interviews and the development of metaphors. The project tested a model of pastoral leadership focused upon the roles of 'reflective guide' and 'mission initiator.' Analysis of the pastors' perceptions and definitions of ministry issues confirmed that when identity is clarified, potentials and boundaries are seen more clearly. The goals and objectives were designed to be reached within three to five years.  The goals included the establishment of reachable ministry goals, improvement of the Bible teaching program, greater involvement in outreach, and greater love for fellow members.  The congregation was given opportunity, through open forums, to give valuable insight to the planning. The results were approved by the congregation's acceptance of the Guidebook, a new Glorieta plan to improve teacher training and the relocation of the church by 1992. The basic premise of the project is that effective biblical pulpit communication can be achieved in the church.  The project reviews fifteen weeks of designated sermons from the book of Hebrews.  Talk-back sessions followed the preaching of the messages. Supervised subgroups of the congregation met in homes, called 'homegroups.'  The homegroup leaders went through leadership training touching on areas such as theology for homegroups, biblical fellowship, crowd breakers, church outreach, sharing your testimony, servanthood, biblical caring, and prayer in small groups.  Another subgroup called marriage-obics was instituted for young marrieds first, and then opened to all who were married.  The strength of this ministry was in its practicality and spontaneity.  Measurement of success was made by written evaluation of the participants.
