It proposes the thesis that it is possible to recount a congregation's history by listening to the preaching that occurred there. The project conducts a literary analysis of sermons preached in three Lutheran congregations in Northwest Ohio during a given year.  This analysis is laid alongside the descriptions of significant parish events in bulletins, newsletters and other written documents. The study incorporates both professional and practical research.  Professionally, the paper evaluates factors suggested when a biblical approach is taken to the analysis of church growth.  Practically, the study applies the professional research and analysis to a specific circumstance -- that of the Fresno First Church of the Nazarene.  The goal of the paper is to find biblically and theologically informed alternatives for increased church growth effectiveness. The negotiating method is adapted from the Harvard Research Project.  Pastors and lay leaders in three congregations are involved in testing the model.  They meet with a facilitator for five sessions and use two test instruments, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and World View Test Instrument, to facilitate negotiations. In the second Quadrennium it received greater support from the Church.  Within the Southern New England Conference a strategy was put into place in 1983.  This project focuses on that strategy and raises questions about its relevance. To determine the impact of the strategy, visits are made to ethnic centers, a structured interview is held with Bishop George Bashore and questionnaires are sent to district superintendents, pastors and lay persons. The second purpose of this project is to develop an outline of a five-year plan for mission and ministry which the leadership of the author's congregation could use to understand the church's changing socio-cultural environment.  The research uncovers a mission orientation in the learned identity, context, program and process of the congregation. The goal of the practicum was to develop a plan for recruiting and training lay leaders in the local church that could help solve the problem by providing a reservoir of trained and willing persons adequate to meet the needs of that church. The author worked with a local church in developing and using a leadership plan that was repeated for four years. Evaluations and observations indicated that the plan did make a significant difference in the availability of lay leadership.
