Through a study of relevant literature, a developed theology of change and the results of congregational surveys, the project discovers that failure to adapt is not due to fear of displacement, but to fear of the loss of church and neighborhood. The thesis of this project is that these principles can be applied to the lay pastoral care of an individual congregation and thus can provide a place to support both dying persons and their families.  The project develops a prototype program and curriculum which provides training in medical, emotional and spiritual care, as well as counselor training.  The curriculum was tested over an eight month period among eighty-one persons from thirteen congregations in Fresno, California. Three theses make up this project.  First, the pastor should be a teacher of adults in the local church.  Second, church history should be taught in the local church. By such celebration, we will be affirming a biblical, historical and theological mandate, and appropriating an effective means of nourishing faith, encouraging koinonia and enabling ministry.  The project lays out the above mandates and describes an extensive study conducted in one congregation through stages of preparation, execution and evaluation.
