A conflict over keys underscores changing identity, leadership, power and authority issues in growing churches. Arlin Rothauge's 'pastoral' and 'program' church theory explains that change.  The author argues for a cyclical view of transition.  Four events on identity, spiritual formation, leadership and future directions are described. Modest success is shown in moving towards the program church.  A second conflict shows major success in becoming a program-sized church. One of the main causes of constant conflict and affliction was the operation of a women's financial association (GYE) originally started to assist the needy in crisis.  Within this Christian community, the ill-balanced emphasis on money estranged everyone and undermined the spiritual solidarity of the group. By professing faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and through the public ritual of baptism, believers become citizens of God's rule and disciples of Christ with all the faithful.  From this understanding issues a corollary supposition that relationships are to be loving, forgiving, respectful, and non-manipulative, embodying Jesus' example.  The ministry challenge addressed in this thesis project is a congregation composed of closed, enmeshed, manipulative family and friend relationships resistant to the admission of newcomers. No specialized denominational resources currently exist to help these at-risk churches.  This dissertation documents the conception and experimental use with a case congregation, of a 'pre-mission' parish consultation model along with the model's evaluation and proposed revisions.  Furthermore this model is described here so as to make it available to other parish professionals for their critique, use and further development. Thirty-five interviews were conducted from participants in the 1989 consolidation in Chicago's Englewood and the San Francisco consolidation after its 1989 earthquake. The study explores the roles of ritual and pastoral care in highly conflicted situations using the praxis-theory-praxis method of practical theology and through the lens of trauma and reconciliation.
