The first chapter presents views of specific theologians on the subject of suffering and the expected role of lay ministers to meet the needs of the suffering.  Subsequent chapters provide practical considerations for lay ministers.  The final chapter presents the development, execution, and assessment of the training program. As a result, their experience of ministerial crises are defeating. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between ministerial crises and pastors' spiritual lives. The information was gathered from United Methodist pastors in Kentucky through an interview process. The specific goal of this project is to expand the theoretical foundation upon which crisis ministries are built and to provide a practical model that clergy can use in crisis intervention.  Methodology was academic research and case study.  The seven step crisis intervention model for clergy was helpful in a number of contexts of crisis ministry: individual and family crisis; a psychiatric emergency; a congregation in crisis; a community racial conflict; and, a major crisis in Mississippi jails and prisons. In the situation, twelve children and male adolescents were sexually abused by a male teenager from the church family. The focus of the research was upon the manner in which the leadership dealt with the problem.  Information was gathered from various parties involved; the responses of these various groups were then compared and evaluated.  The goal of the research was to discover and chronicle principles of leadership in the midst of a crisis, specifically one involving sexual abuse in a church. Questions regarding church discipline involved what constitutes cause for official church discipline, how discipline is to be carried out, and what also constitutes reason for the removal of the action. The dissertation also briefly addressed the issue of the relationship of church and state in matters involving the criminal activity of a church member. Seven persons were trained for nine weeks in caregiving skills, crisis recognition, theological backgrounds, and self-understanding.  Six sermons focused the congregation on the Christian's response to various human needs.  The project resulted in personal growth and self-awareness for those equipped as crisis caregivers.  The development of the crisis care team multiplied the ministry of the professional clergy.
