Having studied the congregation's history and ethos in concert with a sister church, the aim of the project was to develop a leadership covenant with the two congregations.  Working with the joint pastor-parish relations committee, a variety of instruments were used to discern an appropriate leadership style in that situation. With a renewed understanding of what it means to be a covenant community, members of this church have begun to find a balance in giving and receiving care and supported the implementation of a particular model for care involving the training and organization of individuals in small groups.  Interviews and focus groups assessed the results of educational objectives and the implementation of the model. Espousing a 'Theology of Helpful Trauma,' the author asserts that crises are developmentally significant opportunities for maturation and encourages clergy and other leaders to facilitate development in crisis  rather than work to control it.  Four 'touchstones' are provided which empower leaders within such situation to encourage development.
