This presents a tremendous challenge and opportunity for the church in general, and for the African-American and Hispanic church in the Washington Metropolitan context in particular, to be involved in cross-cultural evangelism.  This project presupposes that cross-cultural evangelism will enhance positive social interaction between the two communities while highlighting the universality of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The Great Commission is our mandate to evangelize cross-culturally. In doing so it will challenge social and political structures that create and tolerate poverty, civil strife, racism, sexism, and nationalistic egoism.  The research model was in the form of a case study and survey.  A questionnaire was disseminated to two local congregations in the Washington, DC area, one Hispanic and one African-American. The resulting data was analyzed to identify the present attitudes of both groups.  There is some evidence of favorable attitudes from both groups toward an African-American cross-cultural evangelistic ministry to the Hispanic community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130495861391360,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:32:31.235Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:34:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:40:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7ff9bebf-b62f-4e1f-8274-caf94798acda","accessControl_ssim":["847f1a15-3291-4f96-8cd2-8c62059ed43f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Cross culture study: two African expressions: a comparative study between Celestial Church of Christ (Yoruba) and Church of God in Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:34:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:54:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c83df790-212e-4025-96fb-f8bbcfc5d1f4"],"hasLease_ssim":["2b598fe3-65e3-4594-9c07-8856bf2220c7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Howard University"],"advisor_tesim":["Elias Farajajé-Jones"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["M Carolyn Hui-Balogun"],"keyword_tesim":["Local church mergers"],"publisher_tesim":["Howard University School of Divinity"],"subject_tesim":["Church of God in Christ","Mountaintop Experience Church of the Living God","Yoruba Celestial Church of Christ","Cross-cultural studies"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Cultural diversity is a result of two cultures developing in two different geographical locations and working out solutions to environmental problems in isolation from one another. Different cultures constantly experience cross-cultural dynamics which challenge ministry to be sensitive to and reflective of the needs and concerns of cross-cultural society.  Therefore, the role of ministry in rapidly changing pastoral contexts should be reexamined continuously to be effective cross-culturally.  This project emerges out of a cross-cultural pastoral experience which provides tools and opportunities to discern critical issues in the ministry and to articulate a methodology for the ministry.  The project envisions and suggests how ministry can be cross-culturally whole.  Such wholeness includes the authenticity of being unique within a cultural tradition, and interdependence through cross-cultural respect and the learning process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132008235139072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:56:33.547Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:16:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:46:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4b596fb4-4f48-4a35-9cee-368b4a58b682","accessControl_ssim":["c3dd1c8c-1772-45b6-8e7c-a0002fdadaeb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Development of a model which identifies ways in which people change as a result of a cross-cultural immersion experience"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:16:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:20:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1813f2e6-83c1-4765-9205-677a2fb36641"],"hasLease_ssim":["d354bbd8-513e-4b0d-a035-d09da0d520a2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Christine Eaton Blair","John R Hendrick"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"location_tesim":["North America--Mexican-American Border Region","United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gerald F Stacy"],"keyword_tesim":["Presbyterian Border Church work"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christians","Attitude change","Cross-cultural studies","Church work with immigrants"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The primary goal of this project was to discover whether it is possible to measure the growth in Christian faith of individuals who participate in a one week cross-cultural work/study immersion experience, under the leadership of Presbyterian Border Ministry, at one of its five project sites on the US/Mexican border.  The secondary goal was to discover significant elements in the experience for the purpose of redesigning the event so that the potential for Christian growth might be maximized.  The first learning was that the measurement of significant changes in Christian maturity requires a longer period of time than a one week experience.  The second learning was the surprise: participants dislearned.  They were apparently less sure of answers to questions after the event than they were before it.  The project demonstrated for Presbyterian Border Ministry some of the ways in which its immersion events are flawed. Analysis demonstrates that when the Mexican community is directly involved with the project, changes are most likely to occur in how US Christians view themselves and their faith."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135168249987072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:46:47.172Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Cheol H Kwak","hits":1,"label":"Cheol H Kwak"},{"value":"Gerald F Stacy","hits":1,"label":"Gerald F Stacy"},{"value":"M Carolyn Hui-Balogun","hits":1,"label":"M Carolyn Hui-Balogun"},{"value":"Perry L Johnson","hits":1,"label":"Perry L Johnson"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Local church mergers","hits":1,"label":"Local church mergers"},{"value":"Presbyterian Border Church work","hits":1,"label":"Presbyterian Border Church work"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Cross-cultural studies","hits":4,"label":"Cross-cultural studies"},{"value":"African Americans--Religion","hits":1,"label":"African Americans--Religion"},{"value":"Attitude change","hits":1,"label":"Attitude change"},{"value":"Christianity and culture","hits":1,"label":"Christianity and culture"},{"value":"Christians","hits":1,"label":"Christians"},{"value":"Church of God in Christ","hits":1,"label":"Church of God in Christ"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"United States","hits":2,"label":"United States"},{"value":"North America--Mexican-American Border Region","hits":1,"label":"North America--Mexican-American Border Region"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":4,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Howard University School of Divinity","hits":2,"label":"Howard University School of Divinity"},{"value":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Claremont School of Theology","hits":1,"label":"Claremont School of Theology"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":4,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1992","hits":4,"label":"1992"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Miscellaneous","hits":2,"label":"Miscellaneous"},{"value":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Claremont School of Theology","hits":1,"label":"Claremont School of Theology"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Howard University","hits":2,"label":"Howard University"},{"value":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Claremont School of Theology","hits":1,"label":"Claremont School of Theology"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":4,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":4,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
