Prior to my arrival as Director of Music in July of 2006, worship was characterized by a strong sense of 'performance' of the spoken word and musical liturgy. As we welcome new members and continue to seek ways to live out our covenant to honor and celebrate people of all races, cultures, ages, abilities, sexual orientations and gender identities, our worship must also reflect this acknowledgment of diversity in our community, and must inform our shared experience of the divine in all of our lives. The polycentric model is where the 'mother' church and a cluster of one or more 'ethnic' churches operate separately on the same campus. Very few of these churches have transitioned to become truly multiracial and continue to either decline or plateau. This dissertation examines the history, underlying assumptions, possible influence, and effectiveness of polycentric churches, and provides a critique of such churches against a theological backdrop. The dissertation's goal is to educate and persuade racially homogeneous churches, in general, and polycentric churches, in particular, to consider transitioning toward multiracial congregations in order to achieve real church health and growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132589445087232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:05:47.832Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:11:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:54:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3858b720-f546-4e67-8aeb-b876f63f68bc","accessControl_ssim":["3284128b-7a9b-4515-88d7-01cb535b32ad"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Building Ferguson Road Baptist Church into an indigenous multiethnic church in a multiethnic community in East Dallas"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:11:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:45:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dd901a8d-82b3-4e02-9364-6a0e1c16be11"],"hasLease_ssim":["09d65a9e-2b60-486f-a55f-a9bf1d5f6ab4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John M Yeats"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Wayne W Wible"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community","Congregations--Self-evaluation"],"publisher_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Cultural pluralism","Church--Biblical teaching","Congregations","Mission of the church","Globalization--Religious aspects","Baptists","Ferguson Road Baptist Church (Dallas, Tex)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation proposes a unique new model for church revitalization and growth, adopted by this particular local church after studying and analyzing ways to reach out to evangelize and minister to the people in an extremely demographically diverse community. Although each of these multiethnic churches have come to the same conclusion regarding the importance of being united and inclusive based on their biblical understanding of the New Testament, they have important differences in their strategies. Upon closer examination of each of these representative multiethnic churches, one finds variations because of differing motivations for doing multiethnic ministry.
