Using participation observation and interviews, it analyses two types of parish prayer groups, which embody the separate inculturation of the gospel into indigenous Fijian and Indo-Fijian cultures, and finds them inadequate. The context of this project is a Presbyterian congregation in Chicago which includes African immigrants, African Americans, Euro-Americans, persons with chronic mental illness and those whose quirkiness has avoided medical detection. The author explores how people who are displaced from their cultures and/or families of origin experience the church as 'home'. The author focused on a particular congregation and ways in which small Bible study groups affected the cultural understanding of members.  She examined the complexities of culture and the significance of building relationships.  She worked with Paul Kimmel's definition of cultural understanding to examine the growth in understanding of persons utilizing a method called 'African Bible study.' An analysis of the responses served as the basis of a report given to the administrative leadership that they might develop a plan to provide a more beneficial experience for students who are facing diversity issues now and in the future.  Results indicated that qualitative research is warranted. The author's own experiences with pick-up soccer games and as part of this community served as the primary background.  Sociological and theological resources regarding play were evaluated, with particular interest in how the 'unwritten' rules of a play community help to structure that community.
