Although progress has been noted concerning ethnic and racial relationships among America's citizenship, it is also clear that our nation must continue to move forward in breaking down ethnic and racial barriers that still divide. This dissertation proposes that the solution to what still separates one racial or ethnic group from another begins in the multiethnic church through transformational leadership. The author used action research to study: (1) the initial intercultural competence among campus staff (2) training elements appropriate for the group and purpose (3) changes after training and (4) evidence of the training model's effectiveness. Data collection included pre-training Intercultural Development Inventory [registered symbol] assessments and post-training survey. Prior to my arrival as Director of Music in July of 2006, worship was characterized by a strong sense of 'performance' of the spoken word and musical liturgy. As we welcome new members and continue to seek ways to live out our covenant to honor and celebrate people of all races, cultures, ages, abilities, sexual orientations and gender identities, our worship must also reflect this acknowledgment of diversity in our community, and must inform our shared experience of the divine in all of our lives. The case study for this project is of African Evangelical Baptist Church of Grand Prairie, Texas. The researcher conducted interviews of church members. The information obtained from members provided proof that the church was started on an ethnic, linguistic, social, and cultural premise and was experiencing five percent annual growth. The polycentric model is where the 'mother' church and a cluster of one or more 'ethnic' churches operate separately on the same campus. Very few of these churches have transitioned to become truly multiracial and continue to either decline or plateau. This dissertation examines the history, underlying assumptions, possible influence, and effectiveness of polycentric churches, and provides a critique of such churches against a theological backdrop.
