The author researched selective biblical texts which deal with church discipline. He studied effective communication to advocate the need for change toward practicing discipline. He focused on training the deacons of Macedonia through a six-week seminar to implement discipline in the church. The research instruments were surveys used in the Likert scale. They are classified as Supernumerary (SN) ministers. In a pastoral setting where the congregation is small and people resources are limited, the pastor and congregation benefit from ministries developed and implemented by Supernumerary ministers. Looking at text, tradition, and actual practice, the latter of which was gained through a survey of American Baptist pastors -- the writer evaluated approaches to this question, determining that inconsistency too often emerges in the context of application. The project director had three goals. First, the project director researched applicable material on personal evangelism. Particular attention was given to principles, problems, and the presentation of the personal evangelism encounter. Second, the project director developed curriculum to teach a series of lessons on personal evangelism. Six lessons were developed and administered over a three-week period. The lessons equipped deacons to engage in personal evangelism. Third the project director's presentation and content of lessons were evaluated at the conclusion of the project. This thesis will illustrate the process First Presbyterian Church of Burlington went through in order to shift the deacons' role from one of historical stewardship/maintenance leadership to one of pastoral care. Members of the church were led through a discernment process in order to identify and utilize these spiritual gifts. Prayer and preaching were the foundation for both the preacher and the laity throughout the change process. Although the congregation decided not to reinstitute the office of deacon at this time, significant learning and growth in perspective occurred concerning the nature of change in small congregations. The project involved three phases. Phase one included the selection of participants from diverse cultural backgrounds, and designing of learning activities. Phase two was the actual training event. Phase three involved the post-training interview and evaluation of participants and the project director. Documents on deacon selection and training criteria were produced. As a result of that study, the task force created a specific ministry description for deacons and then shared its findings and the new ministry description with the congregation through a carefully designed plan of education. The initial research and review was accomplished through interviews and pastoral as well as church input, and through biblical study and insight, the need for additional training was evident. As a result of this investigation, the conclusion was reached that the project leader would develop a six-month deacon leadership model. In summary, the goal of this project to assist prospective deacons in discovering their true ministerial calling was reached. Prospective deacons gained knowledge and understanding of
