The project also considers the transitional diaconate (for those to be ordained to the presbyterate).  It explores the current expression of the permanent diaconate and questions raised within each communion.  The author concludes that the permanent diaconate as an ordained office of ministry should be discontinued and that the transitional diaconate should be retained as an ordained office, but should be revised to respond to the servant mission of the church. Although they comprise a significant proportion of lay leadership, deacons are frequently underused and appear to flounder.  This project examines this ministry of the deacon and provides specific options for its improvement.  Through the use of surveys and in-depth interviews, the project identifies four pivotal areas where deacons appear to flounder: 1) biblical-historical roots; 2) understanding their role as 'the Body' of Christ; 3) servanthood; 4) purposeful organization. A 447 page manual approaches the Bible inductively to discover patterns for a biblically consistent theology of leadership structure.  Christ is the head to whom each member is accountable.  Members are to recognize biblically qualified men raised up by God to be elders and deacons.  Elders remain as long as qualified, while deacons remain if qualified and needed. A theological understanding of life, death and ministry was developed from biblical and secular sources.  Divided into six sessions, the educational experience utilized group discussion, audio-visual presentations, simulations, and visitation. Templer's 'Death Anxiety Scale' and subjective self-reporting were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational experience. Deacons need to be trained and equipped for ministry through a diaconate that is seen as the worshipping and serving core of the church. The koinonia of the diaconate through their prayer life, study, and learning together; and their commitment to the ministry of Jesus Christ in the church and through their own lives will begin a process of renewal for the church. They will, in effect, become salt, light, and leaven for the church. By biblical, historical, and theological foundations the author concludes that service for women is inherent in the doctrines of universal priesthood and gift bestowment.
