Fifteen newly elected deacons participated in in-depth training to gain better understanding of spiritual gifts and their use in deacon ministry, attending eleven classes as a part of the project.  The entire diaconate participated in a small portion of the project. The project involved academic study and research at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Hardin-Simmons University. The new deacons fully participated in the Deacon Training Class and are using their spiritual gifts in ministry at Pioneer Drive. The project design included a five-week training seminar on the discipline of prayer in the devotional life. A sixth session about leading small groups was implemented among the deacon group. Elements of the project included the use of a training program developed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, a series of sermons by the pastor on deacons and lay ministry, and a more in-depth study on these subjects.  Methods of study included the project activities, the evaluation of these activities, and consultation of numerous bibliographical resources.  The thesis includes biblical, historical, and theological studies on deacon ministry.  As a result of this study, deacons were held in higher esteem by the congregation because of their increased visibility and involvement. Some inactive members did return to the church. The success of the project is attributed to the faithful and obedient leadership of key leaders who served as trainers.  The project has enhanced and expanded the evangelism ministry of the church. A base for ministry was developed from the biblical concept of servant and the employment of historical and theological research. Evaluation of the plan developed was performed through questionnaires.  The evaluation was that this program increased the frequency of deacon visitation and assisted the deacons in developing a positive understanding of their work.  However, the congregation identified little or no change. The project led the deacons to discover their style for managing conflict, identified the types of conflict, examined the nature of church conflict, and presented various strategies which are effective for resolving church conflict.  The theological rationale for conflict ministry included three biblical case studies of conflict, the ministry of the diaconate, and a theology and practice of conflict management.  The conclusion reached in the project is that deacons can be trained to be more effective as conflict ministers within the
