The writer developed a project within his local congregation designed to respond to these needs for the church, the prospective deacons, and their families.  The pastor developed a pretest, posttest, accompanied by appropriate training, for all groups of participants. The purpose of this project was to create a greater awareness of biblically based deacon ministry on the part of the congregation and to equip the deacons to become servant-ministers.  Two methods of research were employed: the experimental method and the descriptive method. With the combination of these two methodologies, the project was successfully accomplished. Statistically significant growth was measured in the deacons' understanding of senior adult needs, crime's impact on senior adults, and counseling senior adult victims. A phone interview with fifty of the most recently hospitalized church members revealed a need for deacon visitation.  A survey of the deacons indicated that a majority desired to be better equipped for hospital visitation.  The training utilized the clinical pastoral education model including: seminars, case conferences, interpersonal relationship groups, and personal supervision. An andragogical section follows which presents practical uses of the material.  Some positive results are obtained. An informal demographic questionnaire was completed by each deacon. The level of understanding was determined using a Likert scale questionnaire and a conflict inventory instrument in the pre/post study interview. The results indicated that overall the project may have enabled the deacons to better understand their role in conflict resolution.
