The results were then integrated into a suggested curriculum modification for Catholic Universities offering masters degrees as part of diaconal formation. The following work provides a five week seminar that has been taught to a group of deacons from the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York. The seminar helped the participants to recognize, understand and apply specific skills in which to enhance their preaching. The project involved the design, implementation and evaluation of a parish-based continuing formation program for seven permanent deacons.  In the design phase, a needs assessment, including the Deacon Perceiver Interview and the Myers-Briggs as well as systems analysis, were used to articulate goals for the continuing formation program.  In the implementation phase, nine training sessions were conducted which focused on the issue of identity development from the Whiteheads, Erikson, Zullo and Egan, and theological reflection skills. Discussions of hopes, fears, problems and reservations were analyzed and compared with Vatican II and post-conciliar theologies of the diaconate, presbyterate and church order.  The resulting theology involves the complementarity of roles of laity, diaconate, presbyterate and episcopacy in pursuing the mission of the church. Priests will only accept the diaconate when they understand why it was restored. Understanding--and definition--can be achieved through massive catechesis. The program was designed to assist the church's response to a shortage of ordained catholic clergy.  The author found that basic skill development, pastoral identity, and interdisciplinary awareness could be improved through a series of five eight-hour sessions that were didactic, clinical, reflective, and experiential in nature.
