I, though, am ordained in the Evangelical Free Church. Much of the American church dwells in a culture that does not seek to deal squarely with death. The irony is that in this death-denying culture people at one moment deny death, and at the same time 'experience more deaths' through television, movies, and video games (in some of the new video games people seek to kill people at every turn) than any civilization in human history. We seek death in our entertainment, while at the same time we fear death's invasion into our lives. Life forces us to deal with the very thing we dread--death. We seek to place death in the realm of fiction until it comes in our door. In life, death controls the real story line. The American church rarely focuses on death. The church primarily deals with the subject of death at the time of death--the funeral. After the funeral we seek to return to normal life as quickly as possible, though death has removed normalcy forever for the family and friends of the deceased. The result is that most American Christians are ill prepared to face life's expected conclusion--either theirs, or their loved ones. The goal of my project is to help local churches present a Christian theology of death; to provide practical helps in discussing these issues in the church; and to teach church people to cope with death, dying, and grief from the Scriptures (this will be done in four seminars). The four seminars were presented to a local church and evaluated."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719437727694848,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:50:04.498Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:12:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:40:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8d81b52e-5c0a-4040-aa42-d650797d724f","accessControl_ssim":["cc760c35-493d-42b9-8f7d-c83f48498376"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["New liturgies for life's transitions: congregational participation in death and marriage"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:12:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:16:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ab4d89b1-20e6-491e-b181-24d415b7eccd"],"hasLease_ssim":["68e36412-51d3-48a7-bd99-474cb93f1aa8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald A Chatfield"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mark X Pirazzini"],"keyword_tesim":["Word and sacrament"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Death--Religious aspects--Christianity","History","Marriage","Rites and ceremonies","Liturgics","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project documents an eighteen-week group process during which two liturgies of word and sacrament were created for people passing through two major transitions in life -- death and marriage. The themes throughout this paper are suffering, death, salvation, redemption, and resurrection. These are followed historically in the Old and New Testaments. Suffering in the OT is thought of variously as a punishment by God, an an educative process, as suffering caused by evil, etc. In the NT these views of suffering are modified in the light of Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection. Resurrection to life in the spirit completes the victory over suffering, sin, and death. The third and fourth chapters deal with these themes from a psychological perspective using the ideas of Jung and Frankl. Frankl's emphasis is the importance of finding meaning in suffering; Jung emphasizes the creative use of suffering. Chapter five is a theological perspective on the pain of God and our human dilemma. Shared suffering is important, and God shares our suffering. In the final chapter I have integrated suffering, death, and resurrection into my ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133510973521920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:20:26.670Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:36:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:01:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a1582e38-2a58-4fb4-b035-cf92b1eaa8ab","accessControl_ssim":["cea2a59d-df8e-4932-bf75-913378477542"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Bridges: ministry with the bereaved at Saint James Church, Rocky Hill, Connecticut"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:36:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:50:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2f130bc9-a29f-4161-83ba-017346cf4e02"],"hasLease_ssim":["19d7e86f-b3d2-4279-8332-558ec14861de"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Thomas Hoyt"],"year_tesim":["1985"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Maria Toce"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bereavement","Group psychotherapy","Pastoral counseling","Death--Religious aspects--Christianity","Grief","St James Church (Rocky Hill, Conn)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project reports how the author went about the formation of a bereavement group at Saint James Parish, Rocky Hill, Connecticut. The findings suggest the need for further research on the impact of Christian death education and counseling on emotional and spiritual well-being of health-care professionals."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716899059138560,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:09:43.435Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:17:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:14:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fba88ac5-c86c-4a2b-bef2-fc5e72dd8b01","accessControl_ssim":["84f1e4ce-5a70-422a-8f7d-3ab13f00a72e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral counseling in death and grief"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:17:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:19:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["05b440a4-3763-46c5-bc72-17c45c3e8a0b"],"hasLease_ssim":["d27d3465-48df-4df0-96f4-55ed6b2ae8cf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Phillips Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William R Chace"],"publisher_tesim":["Phillips Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral counseling","Death--Religious aspects--Christianity","Grief","Identity (Psychology)","First United Methodist Church (Cherokee, Okla)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project emanated from the thesis that there is no experience more traumatic than the death experience. It is akin to what is called a phenomenological hermeneutic. The data partially fulfilled the expectations of the hypothesis.
