Translated into practical ecclesiology, responsibility for church became the prerogative of the baptized, not just the ordained.  This realization led to the development of a variety of collegial bodies in the 1970s.  The opportunities were endless as were the problems.  The author recognized the major source of the problem: the use of a secular model of decision making. These suitability images contain non-task oriented factors.  Interviews with pastor nominating committee members reveal that the impact of suitability factors on the ultimate decision is not discussed.  In interviews with former pastor nominating committee members, task-oriented factors were not given as a prime factor in hiring.  Non-task oriented suitability factors were suggested as major concerns. The paper uses the Wesleyan quadrilateral and an analysis of the local church setting as a basis for establishing role priorities.  The paper includes ten attributes which the writer considers essential for effective ministry.  Senior ministers should take into account their strengths and weaknesses regarding these attributes in order to establish priorities in a realistic and practical manner.
