The author conducts interview testing to discover if attitude shifts occur as a result of the subcommittee's work.  He surveys 62 congregations about their confirmation practices. For the most part, the church has ignored this major life-cycle event, but the author seeks to rectify this neglect.  He draws on liturgical history and developmental psychology to argue that Confirmation cannot fill this gap. Leaving home is an initiation into the culture, not into the church. As a way of understanding character, this project offers a conceptual model for four negotiations that constitute the human endeavor for making decisions.  The project introduces these negotiations to participants, invites them to identify one, and gives them an opportunity to consider current social issues with those of like negotiation. It helps adult children understand that an elderly parent's problem behavior can be based on discouragement.  Behavioral modification methods can be used to lend encouragement to elderly parents, to build better family relationships, to support the elderly's decision-making, and to enable them to sustain and deepen faith in God.
