The district superintendent is a key catalyst in the model.  This document is part of a larger design in which the district superintendency is the bonding agent of denominational vitalization.  The model consists of three district events designed for small membership congregations: confirmation retreat; Sunday school workshop and rally; and mission project in Haiti. All three events were designed by laity and clergy persons from small membership churches in the district with assistance from district and conference staff persons. Through the preaching of the Word and the celebration of the Eucharist in the district meetings of the clergy and the laity, the district superintendent becomes more than a manager of order. When implemented in the two districts, the data received in the evaluative process indicates that the district superintendent may be perceived as a spiritual leader of the district. This model designed a three-year process whereby the District Council on Ministries and local congregation on the Frederick District were assisted by the superintendent in developing a mission statement. Results show that the District Council on Ministries and thirty-eight churches developed mission statements. In the model a district superintendent develops a supportive pastoral relationship with three clergypersons.  They engage in a process of identifying their personality types, sharing their life journeys, and working with the superintendent to develop a performance covenant to move them to effectiveness.  This is part of a larger design in which the district superintendent is viewed as the bonding agent for vitalization in the United Methodist Church. Ten men and women in the Dalton District of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church committed four weeks to the project.  The district superintendent was the convener, a co-participant, and provided leadership by precept and example.  Sessions included theological foundations of wellness, a medical evaluation of each participant, identification of healthy eating and exercise habits, and application of learnings to the local church and community.  All participants met at least one of their goals relating to diet and/or exercise.
