In theory  no  less  than liturgy  Protestants  attest  the  permanency  of  the  marriage relationship.  The  marriage  service  has  often  included  the familiar  phrase  'so  long  as  we  both  shall  live.'  Premarital counseling ,  at  least  premarital  counseling  rooted  in  the solid  biblical  tradition,  stresses  the  indissolubility  of this  union. To uncover these factors twenty-eight 'main-line' Protestant church members were interviewed, each having been a member of a rural or small town church at the time of divorce.  The interviews revealed specific factors that caused some divorcing people to leave the church and other factors that enabled some to remain active. The emotional impact upon children and parents is presented. The biblical-theological foundations of post-divorce adjustment are viewed with the aspect of forgiveness as a primary element in adjustment and decreasing stress in the post-divorce period.  Research was accomplished through a library survey of behavioral science and legal data, along with interviews of family counselors and judges.
