The research explored the perceptions of catechumens and candidates, in order that pastoral ministers might facilitate the credibility of the Church's image in actualizing the liberation of humanity. For the catechumens and the candidates, critical areas of concern are identified as family, education, and spirituality. The thesis begins by providing background, explanation, and evaluation of a model of collaboration used by a parish worship board.  The thesis then reviews the theology of God, church, and ministry of Joseph Ratzinger and Avery Dulles, evaluating both through reference to the pastoral experience.  The thesis then explicates the author's theology of God, church, and ministry arising out of the pastoral experence and the theology of both Dulles and Ratzinger. Using a year-long sermon series based on the Psalms, the thesis shows that one can meaningfully tell the whole story of Jesus Christ as our faith is modeled to us in the Apostles Creed.  Such sermons also use the original search for meaning that each Psalm represents to help today's Christian community invoke God's presence in our joy and crises.  Parish feedback groups and processes indicate that the Psalms sermons provide new insights for lay ministry and spiritual development as well as for significant collegial involvement. Part two deals with the church in the New Testament, the views of Luther, Calvin and Wesley on the church, Avery Dulles' models of the church, and considers the views of Karl Barth and H Richard Niebuhr.  The thesis/text suggests that our understanding of the church is best expressed in dialectical terms.  God is the one who calls us, loves us and reaches out to us first, but there is also a human response.
