The deficiencies of this theology are noted.  He then presents S. Mark Heim's theology of religious ends and asks what impact training in this theology might have on the work of military chaplains. The author studied what parish practices encourage an ecumenical understanding of the faith.  A survey was used to gather data from full communion settings.  The author visited three of these ministry settings, conducted interviews and used case studies to determine which practices promote ecumenical understanding.  Friendship among local pastors, and ecumenical leadership among judicatory officials are formative.
