The scholars S.N. al-Attas, Wael Hallaq and Umar Farouq Abd-Allah have answered this question by stating that the principal essence of Islam is its ethico-moral system, which informs humanity of its identity as God’s moral subjects by instilling within them the prophetic ethic. Yet Islam’s identity formation, which is meant to protect the human fitra, i.e. the primordial human state, and is a foundation of its educational paradigm and ethical philosophy, is interrupted by the rise of the modern nation state through its refashioning of the human self and its use of secularism as a medium to make citizenship the primary principle of identity.1 This article contends that due to the traumatic social and psychological effects of the modern nation state and colonialism upon the Muslim collective consciousness and religious identity, restoration of Islamic education must take place through holistic means. Achieving the ethical aims of Islamic education must come through reclaiming the Islamic identity, rerooting its pedagogy in the Qur’anic worldview, reviving traditional spiritual orthopraxy and utilizing relevant psychological research to integrate contemporary psychological models aimed at identity development and healing. Restructuring Islamic curriculums ought to be a holistic enterprise that seeks to reformulate an “alchemy of happiness”2 that heals, edifies and informs the Muslim psyche - imbuing it with the traditional Islamic identity in a way that is therapeutic, relevant and reinvigorating."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836642747210006528,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T16:10:16.428Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-23T03:30:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:47:32Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f9e7d375-fe1a-47b2-8631-d1e95879ad51","accessControl_ssim":["4be77424-74c4-421a-b914-69394bc498b8"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"depositor_ssim":["rukayat.yakub@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["rukayat.yakub@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Black Belonging: Assessing Antiblackness in Full-time US Islamic Schools"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-23T03:30:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:47:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7a2b2c3b-ddbb-46aa-bc4a-7b77eb8941a2"],"hasLease_ssim":["eec41550-6a61-475e-992e-bc7a4ea22acd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Rukayat Yakub"],"subject_tesim":["Education","Belonging"],"abstract_tesim":["A sense of belonging is an essential part of youth development. Antiblackness, the inability to see Black humanity, is an undeveloped topic in Muslim spaces. In this thesis Black belonging is studied because despite Muslims having an identity construct that embraces all humanity, preliminary studies indicate that this construct is not actualized in Muslim schools. To understand this phenomenon and fill this research gap I conducted a mixed method study to understand alumni’s sense of belonging and what role antiblackness plays in their sense of belonging at U.S. Islamic schools. After describing the methodology, five themes are discussed: the deep sense belonging that Prophet Muhammad developed specifically around Black community members, the role antiblackness plays in and around us, the ease by which students use disparaging language around blackness, the inability to see Black American Muslim culture as a legitimate Muslim culture with history, norms, and traditions, and the importance of schools having an ummah embracing identity. The findings explored how hypervisibility and invisibility shaped how students experience school and their sense of belonging. To conclude, using Islamic sources and the data gathered six data-driven recommendations were made to help Muslim education leaders address antiblackness and develop a sense of belonging amongst Black students"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-EDU/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["rukayat.yakub@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836652645639520256,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T18:47:36.306Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-19T02:41:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:56:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"051ca93e-823a-4fed-9e8e-eb733c6fb067","accessControl_ssim":["e2520a4e-2f78-48d3-acc9-8fca6c62d36b"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["fa982262-e9a0-40ea-a1c2-4df934a09db2"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["fa982262-e9a0-40ea-a1c2-4df934a09db2"],"depositor_ssim":["irslan.ahmad@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["irslan.ahmad@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Manzumat Tradition: A Defense of Traditional Islamic Education in Light of Western Standards and the Taxonomy of Learning"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-19T02:41:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:56:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["37565372-5a19-4f39-98d7-b7e7c3a03ab7"],"hasLease_ssim":["38a82ec5-a573-4162-bf81-7ff80b0fca0c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Education"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ahmad, Irslan"],"keyword_tesim":["Islam, Pedagogy, Critical Engagement, Islamic Education"],"subject_tesim":["Education"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper explores the Manzumat tradition, a traditional Islamic educational strategy of memorizing foundational poems on various disciplines and complexities. This project demonstrates that authentic encounter with the wisdom of the Jesuit educational mission, acknowledgement and celebration of the unique gifts these employees bring to mission work, and demonstration of both the relevance and benefit of mission to any work within a Jesuit institution, invite this population to a richer connection to mission. The key question is whether the congregation understands the purpose of the parochial school in the same way that those who started the school understood their purpose in doing so. Institutions, including parochial schools, have a tendency to take their raison d'être for granted and begin to exist for the sake of perpetuating themselves as institutions. To re-dedicate to parochial school ministry in a worthwhile way that serves the true mission for which it was founded, a congregation must evaluate its own assumptions about, goals for, and perceptions of the school ministry. This project provides a template for honestly evaluating the pros and cons of continuing to operate a parochial school in difficult circumstances and honestly comparing the stated, original purposes for the school with the actual purposes for the school in the minds of the congregation members. It offers an example of one way to take a congregation through this self-examination process and in this case, how to help the congregation re-dedicate itself to parochial school ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia selected addiction-recovery ministry leaders in east Mississippi with group facilitation skills. The pastor of Union Baptist Church in Clarke County, Mississippi, is planning to launch Christian addiction-recovery ministries centered on weekday Celebrate Recovery [registered symbol] meetings. The ministries are collaborative works involving selected Chrsitians from Southern Baptist churches in the local Baptist associations. Phase two of these ministries include the addition of a rotating Friday night contemporary worship service at the same non-church locations where the weekday meetings will be held. Three goals are the foundation of this Doctor of Ministry equipping project. The first goal is to research addiction recovery in order to identify group facilitation skills. The second goal is to develop a curriculum to equip selected addiction-recovery ministry leaders in east Mississippi, in group facilitation skills. The third and final project goal is to equip selected addiction-recovery ministry leaders in east Mississippi, in group facilitation skills. The project director's primary purpose in implementing this project is for the world to see that Jesus Christ is alive and still setting captives free."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5e492469-490e-44a3-90c1-17560a603bc2"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720012693372928,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:59:12.828Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:57:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:39:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"53e176ed-ee32-4457-81a0-ab11a8b58941","accessControl_ssim":["0e025cda-069d-4648-8488-f08519f7a1a8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a community needs assessment of at-risk students at Fyffe High School, Fyffe, Alabama"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:57:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:35:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["aee2c020-c19f-4604-be1b-86c040725a56"],"hasLease_ssim":["bc3a70cf-fa3d-4b02-9c03-2b80c3c72569"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jake Roudkovski"],"year_tesim":["2017"],"location_tesim":["Alabama","United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Keith L Atchley"],"publisher_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with students","Education","Student aid","Baptists","High school students"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to develop a community needs assessment of at-risk students in Fyffe High School in Fyffe, Alabama, for the purpose of making recommendations to Fyffe First Baptist Church (Fyffe FBC) on how to best minister to these students and their parents. Multiple forms of demographic data were considered in order to identify the age ranges, socio-economic status, and behaviors that contribute to students becoming at-risk. Interviews with local and state agencies along with local school officials were conducted to ascertain what forms of assistance are available to students and if any proactive interventions are in place to prevent students from slipping into the at-risk category. Research and surveys were conducted in order to discover and assess the age and grade level of students who can be most impacted by intervention and support strategies."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5e492469-490e-44a3-90c1-17560a603bc2"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718789812584448,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:39:46.597Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:53:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:22:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"67b4de0d-1e1c-4d85-9477-6b233b59c3cf","accessControl_ssim":["991f7b93-da32-4672-a1f4-2954fc0cf2df"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Leadership in Church Revitalization"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:53:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:09:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7c38b99f-1bf8-4f36-b337-1e6271b28ab4"],"hasLease_ssim":["7952c3bb-6fc1-45f1-86d4-349e07619214"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Tim Dolan"],"year_tesim":["2017"],"location_tesim":["Ontario--Toronto"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy C Strickland"],"publisher_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Church officers","Church renewal","Leadership--Religious aspects","Education","Church history"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The researcher hypothesized that Toronto area church leaders who participated in a short-term revitalization training cohort would be equipped to begin leading revitalization in their churches.
