Scripture, church history, and liturgical traditions document the primacy of parental involvement. Parents, however, reveal confusion and discomfort with mentoring roles. This thesis project created a survey to examine experiences of Episcopal Church school parents whose children were involved in Communion preparation. The thesis project revealed an improved level of parental comfort having had the opportunity o reflect and reclaim their faith development. An analysis was done of the practice in Nebraska from 2000 to 2009. The knowledge and skill sets required by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church nationally were also analyzed. The current Nebraska practices and the national sets recommended were compared to best practice as seen in entry level seminary preaching courses. After research and creation, the course of study was taught over the course of one academic year. It was then evaluated for its evangelical orientation and relevance by a panel of educators and students. This project tested whether the curriculum developed could meet the OME's requirements for a course of study, be endorsed by an expert panel of Christian educators from Ontario and be found to be engaging and beneficial to a cross-section of high school students. Responding to internal and external review data, this project participated in overall program changes to the Religion/Christian Ministries program at WPC. Focus was given to the sophomore level internship courses to create an observation level experience designed to engage the Northwest culture. The author researched models of contextual theology in preparation for student experiences. Ultimately the project led to a successful grant proposal to the M. J. This project is an experiment in using current technology and development research to create a confirmation curriculum which is appropriate and appealing to sixth-graders while upholding the polity of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the theology of the Reformed tradition. The project combines biblical themes of alienation and transformation with popular culture portrayals of the outsider as mutant. However, many yearn for stronger connections with God and others who value spirituality. Through reflection, worship, and service, we engaged with the young adults of our church.
