Conflict between parents who educate children at home and those who do not often stems from pride and legalism in both parties. Churches that emphasize Christ-centered liberty in education choices and teach covenantal responsibilities of parents toward children experience fewer conflicts. This project proposes that the class-leader system can be a viable part of the AME Church, but it must be modified and shaped into a contemporary mechanism for ministry.  Lack of training of class leaders in Allen Chapel AME Church, Northampton County, North Carolina, proved to be the rule rather than the exception. The church was thereby rendered ineffective in its ministry. The project seeks practical ways to equip class leaders of Allen Chapel AME Church for effective ministry by formulating and administering a training program for class leaders. The project explores roles and expectations of motherhood as well as examining definitions of family.  It details the dilemmas for a mother who tries to parent when not physically present in her household; the dilemmas that she faces in confronting attitudes of judgment and prejudice; the dilemmas presented by feelings of guilt, rejection, and abandonment.
