The training strategy employed is a tiered series of 6 conferences, each with its own curriculum. Elements of the curriculum are intentionally repeated so that a cumulative pattern of learning is established through iteration of key concepts. Each lesson includes as historical description of slavery and an explanation of a spiritual. The curriculum focuses on the public and coded, secret meanings in spirituals. Bible references as source inspiration are provided with each spiritual. A professional panel of twenty-one educators evaluated the curriculum. They found it was an objective presentation of the history of slavery and the spirituals. To that end, the project provides an example of a tested graduate level women's ministry course to train women leaders.  The material was specifically designed for the master's degree in Christian education at Dallas Theological Seminary where the author teaches.  Four evaluation tools over two semesters were implemented. The data was analyzed and used to recreate the course enhancing learning and providing a model for future studies that can be adapted to local church settings as well as academic classrooms.
