It is a study of ten Brethren churches in Singapore. Using the case study method, the study considers the process undertaken by the churches in identifying potential leaders, encouraging and preparing them for leadership, and appointing them to assume full leadership responsibilities in the local churches as elders, thus ensuring leadership continuity. The analysis of the research was synthesized into twelve significant observations. This project examined biblical and extra-biblical texts, contemporary leadership and management materials on servant leadership and input from churches operating with the Carver policy governance model for their governing board for application to the elder board of First Evangelical Free Church of Maplewood, Minnesota. Category sets of governing policies and elder selection and screening materials were developed. Drawing on the theology of ordination in the Wesleyan and United Methodist traditions, the project engaged a small cohort group of ordained elders in the California-Pacific Annual Conference in a year-long conversation on the spiritual, theological and practical issues of leading the United Methodist Church in this period of transition. A quantitative research method (written surveys and focus group interviews) was used for this study. It was determined that influences shaping members' ideas of leadership include scripture, Stone-Campbell principles and practices, workplace experiences, and American political structures. The extent of thee influences varied according to a member's age, gender, and length of association with the Stone-Campbell movement.
