The premise is that empathy, as presented by the psychoanalytic school of self-psychology is a caring and compassionate way for a pastor to be in relationship with his or her ministry setting and models the essence of the gospel message. This research explores how the use of narrative form and style in preaching increases empathy among the members of St. Matthew Presbyterian Church. After an introduction explaining the rationale for the project, background information about St. Matthew is given.  The two phases of qualitative research-sermon feedback sessions and individual interviews-are reported. Explications of empathy and how these theories played out in the research are woven into the reporting of the research.
