From a Christian perspective, a critical reading of the financial meltdown in the year 2008-from Pope Benedict VI, Archbishop Rowan Williams and Reverend Stephen Green, to name a few-pointed to a dichotomizing mindset underlying a lack of consistency in ethical behavior among individuals and corporates which precipitated this economic catastrophe in the first place. Against this backdrop, the overall objective of this thesis-project was to develop a template that would form the basis for a three-credit course to equip Ministers of the Word in their Ministry towards Corporate or Business Professionals. Participants were guided through a process of learning to develop skills for listening to God, self and others. Listening to God is based on prayer in the style taught by Father Thomas Keating. Guided spiritual autobiography is used to help members better listen to one's own life experiences and one another's. Participants are taught basic empathic listening skills and encouraged to show God's love to others, developing Godbearing within group members. The Godbearing concept is based upon Elaine Robinson's book of the same name. The process develops Godbearing as a model for listening-based evangelism. It focuses on the diversity of others and forming genuine relationships. It is not one of conversion, but listening to what God is already doing in the faith life of the person. This research explores how the use of narrative form and style in preaching increases empathy among the members of St. Matthew Presbyterian Church. After an introduction explaining the rationale for the project, background information about St. Matthew is given.  The two phases of qualitative research-sermon feedback sessions and individual interviews-are reported. Explications of empathy and how these theories played out in the research are woven into the reporting of the research. Self-in-relation theory and male spirituality informed the group work, in which participants--through mutual support, personal sharing, and the use of imagination through stories and poems--sought to heal the woundedness of absent or abusive fathers, deal with dynamics of shame, anger and grief, and explore models of power inherent in connection and disconnection. This study involved research into classic Jewish texts, findings in modern psychology and Protestant traditions, and the clinical experience of the author.  Jewish pastoral theology and care is based on sharing a cognitive empathy with the patient or mourner.  This is not restricted to clergy but is incumbent on every Jew.  The study also developed specific roles for the rabbi.
