The author compared the self-identification of type after experiencing the course with a pre-test of the Wagner Enneagram Personality Style Scale. Eight of ten participants matched their self-identification to the score on the pretest. She shows how the Enneagram can be a useful tool for understanding how to preach to a diverse congregation and claims that preachers need to move beyond their own personality type and responses in order to be faithful in proclaiming the Gospel, particularly if they are the primary preaching voice in the congregation. As a personality typology founded on the psychodynamics of sin in nine different self-presentations, the Enneagram can be used with a theologically based phenomenology and it identifies a direction for continued spiritual growth for each type. Workshop participants find the Enneagram useful in addressing issues of spirituality and increasing self-understanding and insight, but its usefulness in revealing and explaining sin is more limited.
