In a qualitative study of 12 Episcopal/Anglican clergy couples in the United States and Canada, the project finds that couple ministry is an authentic call of God for transformation of the church, but the personal cost to these couples is high. Appalachia's earliest settlers bring with them a Scotch-Irish culture and historic anti-Anglican biases. Tennessee's first two bishops promote a High Church understanding of ecclesiology. These two distinct and often diametrically opposed cultural and religious forms remain at odds even into the late twentieth century.
