People from both realms frequently align Christianity with a deontological system of ethics. However, such a system of duty ethics often leads to a self-righteous legalism both groups would oppose. The locus of scripture is not to teach believers to do, but rather to become and the doing will follow. The paper interacts with the teachings of Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas to establish both an historical and theological basis for virtue ethics. The church departed her normal practice of virtue theory and replaced it with deontology. It is time for the church to recover the biblical system of virtue ethics. Deontology is not set aside, but used as a guide for assessing the virtues required. Believers must especially cultivate the virtues of faith, hope and love in order to recover the reputation of the Church as a holy and reliable institution that can point the world to the One True God. When congregants aspire to become virtuous Christians, then the church will be able to recover her identity as the holy institution of God in the eyes of the world. Preaching, teaching and mentoring must lead believers to understand what they must become, and then what they do will be the fruit of that being."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132995676012544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:12:15.243Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:08:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:03:29Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"accc8d8c-4264-4af6-b77b-eecf1b4b07f0","accessControl_ssim":["a47f4f76-58ee-4a35-89b5-447271667e7f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Rapologetics: How the Gospel of Christ Takes On the Street"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:08:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:07:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["63eb7ed8-a855-448d-a495-605173229fa3"],"hasLease_ssim":["1d68196f-5105-4e61-9aa8-2c5da82a7060"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Westminster Seminary California"],"advisor_tesim":["Timothy Z Witmer"],"year_tesim":["2016"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert C Hepburn"],"publisher_tesim":["Westminster Seminary California"],"subject_tesim":["Hip-hop","Ethics","Theology, Practical","Bible","Theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["An examination of the divide between the Church and hip-hop culture, singularly focused on Scripture's capacity for crossing said chasm. The small group model includes both a didactic and a creative writing component. The adolescents, in addition to being very expressive about sexuality, gained understanding about the Bible and about sexuality. Using creative writing in processing the information from the didactics, the teens developed a short play linking sexuality and spirituality for presentation to the congregation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127901343580160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:51:16.910Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:37:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:13:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a897e3d3-f3c5-4773-80a0-0308e41cce50","accessControl_ssim":["545a8c82-23f0-4cad-8c52-eccc8e6096ef"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The beatitudes as a model for discipleship, leadership, and Christian ethics in the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:37:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:01:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f5ade7d4-6280-46f5-ab40-b93ec8371708"],"hasLease_ssim":["5309d1bd-4a02-4bd9-88ed-ae7b8f3a03e0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert Walker"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["J Charles Lockett"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Beatitudes","Ethics","Jesus Christ","African Methodist Episcopal Church","Sermon on the mount","Christian ethics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project helped to install the spirit of the Beatitudes into the laity of a local African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) church.
