How could a congregation move from benevolent benefactor toward missional accompaniment? Surveys and an interview measured the impact of three interventions, Bible study, testimony, and prayer. Theological and Biblical perspectives included missional ecclesiology, accompaniment, spiritual practices, and liberation theology. Theoretical perspectives included post-colonial theory, change theory, and cross-cultural communication. A survey was developed and distributed among thirty participants across five different ELCA congregations in order to develop data. The data gathered indicated that approximately half of the participants lacked a developed understanding of the work of evil and the Devil in their faith lives, including a biblical understanding. The author studied what parish practices encourage an ecumenical understanding of the faith.  A survey was used to gather data from full communion settings.  The author visited three of these ministry settings, conducted interviews and used case studies to determine which practices promote ecumenical understanding.  Friendship among local pastors, and ecumenical leadership among judicatory officials are formative. The particular context was among nine Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregations represented at the November 20002 Power Surge Symposium, conducted by Changing Church, a leadership training ministry of Prince of peace Lutheran Church, Burnsville, Minnesota. The members of the participating congregations were given a questionnaire developed by the Beeson Pastor Team of Kinder, McKee, Law, and Taylor. The effect of ecumenical dialogues and full communion agreements on theological education is analyzed.
