A review of recent literature reveals the evaluation of the Prayer Summit movement, city-wide crusades and other efforts to come together. The acceptance of diversity and its relation to changes in our society is also discussed. Several key passages in the Bible are examined to determine the key principles for unity to occur among believers and the place diversity has in that experience. A survey was conducted of pastors in the writer's local community to identify the current perspective of unity with diversity. Basic beliefs are delineated that are viewed as essential for unity as well as a clarification of the issues that are understood as acceptable areas of diversity in the Body of Christ. The paper concludes with a summary of the biblical principles of unity and some specific guidelines for the Christian community as it seeks unity with diversity, not only for the local church but for the church universal."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128316083699712,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:57:52.437Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:22:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:59:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d7a99603-4990-4b43-ad7b-6c758d541b17","accessControl_ssim":["c4760025-a69c-4df9-814f-b925790013e9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The nineteenth century independent church movement as critique of an evangelical ethos"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:22:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:18:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["85ed5b29-880f-4a54-998f-7bffb8c9b468"],"hasLease_ssim":["17030bdf-bf75-4c3c-84ff-38d88b9a8d04"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Cornish R Rogers"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Norman S Johnson"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelicalism","Independent churches","African Americans--Religion","Bible--Criticism, interpretation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is an analysis of the dissimilarities in African-American hermeneutics within the evangelical tradition. An examination of currents in nineteenth century American religious history and responses by African Americans reveals an intense effort at identity that is true to both the experience of being Christian and being African. The project develops the social context that gave rise to the independent African-American church, and focuses on the dissimilarities of African Americans in the areas of biblical identity and the conversion experience. The hermeneutical challenge is to recognize the ambiguity of the African-American church as a separatist institution justified in its existence in light of the pain of African-American communities. Though the independent church movement institutionalized an ambiguous relationship to the evangelical tradition, the independent churches were clear about the need for freedom. The contemporary issue is not justifying a separate institutional existence, but seeking a hermeneutic that is both Christian and is true to the African-American experience."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132201445752832,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:37.807Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:16:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:53:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"36412047-5e8f-4dd7-8739-5fe7871f6241","accessControl_ssim":["0f574411-30ff-411d-a7b8-3f3f954876cd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a caring community in the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:16:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:42:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["90087d05-c193-40bf-bc44-bad254fd81a7"],"hasLease_ssim":["4fa07640-634c-46e1-a765-a23d13a3f5ef"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert Craig"],"year_tesim":["1991"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul C Collins"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church and social problems","Mission of the church","Evangelicalism","Service (Theology)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The church is a servant called by God to be responsive in serving the needs of people, both in the church and surrounding community. An initial chapter examines the historical and cultural context of Boston and New England. The invitation process and the complex organization of the crusade is detailed. The effect of the crusade is measured by close analysis of questionnaires returned from ministers and lay leaders of churches who participated. Returned questionnaires from inquirers reveal the motivations for attending and responding to the evangelist's invitation.
