This paper uses Muñoz’s theory, in conjunction with the work of historians of evangelicalism and theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, to demonstrate how the Evangelical Right is able to engage with the theological call to be “in the world, but not of the world” by perceiving itself as a marginalized subculture. The Evangelical Right developed in the late 1970s as evangelicals in the United States began to shift from a philosophy of fundamentalist separatism towards explicitly political activism by disidentifying with mainstream culture, working to engage with it and reform it for their own purposes. In making the parallels between Muñoz’s disidentification and evangelical history explicit, this paper argues that the methodological tools of queer theory offer a new frame for understanding the emergence of the Evangelical Right. Revivalists manipulated secular forms of communication attracting new converts into the religious fold. Fundamentalists formed political organizations, such as the Moral Majority and the Religious Right, and advocated for purist ideologies. In recent years, scholars and media outlets have commented on the power and influence of the extremist leaders born out of this movement in the present day; however, often ignored are the self-identified moderate Evangelical leaders. These religious leaders claim to preach beyond American politics, focusing instead on protolyzing to the “Nonchurched Harrys” of the world. The use of rhetorical criticism by Phyllis Trible enriches the discourse, providing ways a writer may create a literary sanctuary to allow others reconsider their spiritual heritage. This is integral to Christian formation and facilitating authentic spiritual transformation in the Christian life. Based on my personal experiences, Chinese evangelical churches have put a strong emphasis on teaching biblical knowledge and encouraging services in ministry and missions. There is a lack of putting the same emphasis on providing channels that guide congregants in nurturing deeper spiritual intimacy with God which leads to whole life transformation. This portfolio includes a spiritual autobiography (Chapter 2) that traces my own spiritual path from being nurtured through acquiring biblical knowledge to growing in my spiritual intimacy with God through applying ancient spiritual practices such as silence and solitude and spiritual companioning. Chapter 3 provides a holistic formation model for Chinese evangelical churches and features four types of Christian spirituality: cognitive spirituality, experiential spirituality, contemplative spirituality, and societal regeneration spirituality. Chapter 4 uses the practice of group spiritual direction in a qualitative research project to determine whether the practice nurtures spiritual transformation of Chinese evangelical Christians. The results from the project affirmed that group spiritual direction did deepen the participants' spiritual intimacy with God and with other believers as well as their commitment to practicing the spiritual disciplines."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133795936632832,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:58.432Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:01:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:21:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"01de7501-ebef-4551-84d1-331886e3b53e","accessControl_ssim":["8c03b627-2b9b-448e-b44b-55c9ba6b445c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A teaching program on the doctrine of the spirit for use in religious education"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:01:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:10:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f9e376db-c45c-485a-b9b6-5afb7032ec69"],"hasLease_ssim":["09d5ab60-8c2f-490a-89ec-6e60edcbb75c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Barfoot"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jeffrey A Bryan"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelicalism","Christian education--Teaching methods","Holy Spirit"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project was developed on the assumption that many pastors and teachers in conservative evangelical churches largely ignore the doctrine of the Spirit in their weekly preaching and teaching ministries. While not all churches fall under this generalization, the evidence presented in this project suggests many fail to celebrate or acknowledge the Spirit's presence in their worship services, sermons, and classes. However, the research conducted in this project shows a positive relationship between a biblical course on the doctrine of the Spirit and an increased knowledge of the doctrine, positive attitudes toward the Spirit, and an increased personal reliance upon the Spirit. The EA Doctrinal Basis focuses on Protestant non-negotiable's and avoids both the minimalism of the ancient creeds and the maximalism of puritan confessions. This statement can be used to define interdenominational unity between the Presbyterian, Baptist, and Methodist traditions, among others. This basis also distinguishes true evangelicalism from false gospels such as those espoused by Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, and the Word of Faith movement."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131688717254656,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:51:28.831Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:39:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:46:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8c7457d1-ee77-4057-a982-4a2660ba1c1f","accessControl_ssim":["4e487cf5-fc09-4cef-bb86-e5eccf304ed2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Need for Interchurch Unity Among Northern New England Evangelical Churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:39:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:14:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c9406216-91b8-4bd6-8c49-878dcf45edf9"],"hasLease_ssim":["1d36d4cf-969a-4019-af01-1a9e82b20216"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Bethel University"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald L Reed"],"year_tesim":["2017"],"location_tesim":["New England"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Philip A Wood"],"keyword_tesim":["Theory"],"publisher_tesim":["Bethel University"],"subject_tesim":["Church--History of doctrines","Church history","Evangelicalism","Church--Unity","Ecumenical movement"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project addressed the lack of and need for unity between evangelical churches in northern New England. Using a broad survey of churches in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, this project demonstrates that many congregations do not provide opportunities for disabled individuals to serve in regular worship gatherings. Its goal is to search for implementable principles, strategies and methodologies with sound biblical and theological foundation to enhance the church leadership and spiritual disciplines, so that a so-called healthy and balanced church could be operated. This implies that this church will be undergoing three conditions: (1) a sound structure system and well operational function; (2) her members demonstrating balanced and vivid Christian life; and (3) undergoing sustainable implementation plans."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Logos Evangelical Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["54e7729a-4915-469f-8fd5-c7bb7ccd6c20"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134520050712576,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:36:29.001Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":82,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
