To fulfill this purpose, twelve church members were selected to participate in eight, two-hour seminars.  The first hour of the seminars dealt with eight foundational doctrines of Christianity.  The second hour of the seminars dealt with essential elements of evangelism and dialogical communication. A quasi-experimental social research design and relevant literary research were used in studying relational evangelism.  The experimental group received the teaching; the control group did not receive any training. Results were compared in pretests and posttests.  It was concluded the Christ did use relational evangelism as a primary tool of evangelizing others.  The adaptation of learnings gleaned from the study was applied to a local church setting. This project tests the premise that an exploration of this tradition will enable laity to witness to their faith.  A small study group of African-American Christians followed a curriculum based on Thomas R Groome's shared praxis model of Christian education, involving interaction with and response to Christian witness.  The study allowed participants to: examine the content of the church's evangelistic witness; explore the experiences of slavery and freedom which have shaped the way African Americans relate the Christian story; and identify prospective means of evangelism in which laity could become active. The director of the project prepared the training material which presented evangelism as a process rather than as a point of decision.  Following an eight-hour training clinic, fifteen pastors and church leaders returned to their congregations to conduct a six-week training program.  This training involved discovering circles of influence, intercession, repairing broken or unhealthy relationships, counseling, and keeping a daily journal of witnessing contacts and intercessory prayer requests.  A pre- and a post-training survey as well as weekly reports from participants were used to measure the increase in the number of witnessing contacts and the development of new relationships. The overall model was a funded collegial Doctor of Ministry group of 12 students focusing in Advanced Seminary Studies of Evangelism in the Reformed Tradition.
