Self help advice versus God centered instruction: can biblical expositional preaching provide answers for contemporary issues?"],"abstract_tesim":["In today's culture, it seems as if the voice of the therapeutic culture is louder and having more validity than the word of God.  As the pastor of the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, GA, the author was able to ask the question: can biblical expositional preaching help a multigenerational church steeped in therapeutic culture deal with contemporary issues?  A case study was produced where first the author developed a focus group to develop the contemporary issues that were important to the congregation as well as a survey to identify the top contemporary issues to be highlighted in a sermon series preached at Tabernacle Baptist Church.  After the sermon series, those who participated in the initial survey were asked to participate in a follow-up survey to see if the preaching was helpful in dealing with contemporary issues. In the first section, the case for a Christ centered meta-narrative running through all of the scriptures is reviewed. Maintaining a Christ centered preaching focus keeps the primary agenda of the scriptures before the congregation. In the second section, the case for practical application is reviewed, with special attention given to application as a response to the Christ centered focus of a passage. Drawing on the history of early Salvation Army preaching into critical conversation with the felt realities of postmodernity, this thesis argues for a recovery of biblical preaching that seeks to name what is at stake for the listener. The CBR has two readings per week for a three year cycle. The first weekly reading follows the biblical narrative from Genesis to Revelation covering the main characters and themes in the Bible story. There is a year each for the Pentateuch, the Monarchy/Exile and the Gospels/Acts. The second readings are from the epistolary, prophetic, poetic or didactic material. The readings are introduced and connected with framing statements. Concurrent to the project leader's preaching, a focus group met for ten weeks to explore postmodernity and to assimilate a training manual. Chapter 1 introduces CSBC, its unique position to impact the Hispanic community, and the need for this project. Chapter 2 addresses biblical and theological issues concerning expository preaching. Chapter 3 presents an analysis of the influence of Liberation Theology and the Charismatic movement, as well as social realities, on the Hispanic community in the United States. Chapter 4 explains the project methodology, with focus given to a training conference featuring lectures on expository preaching and the delivery of an expository sermon. In this project, visual aids primarily referred to objects used in sermons for illustrative purposes. The researcher gave an extensive biblical and theological rationale for the use of visual aids in teaching spiritual truth. He also provided significant scientific evidence for the importance of the visual sense in learning and retention. The project incorporated an 8-week sermon series and a focus group to measure the effectiveness of visual aids with regard to retention.
