Work of Paul Ricoeur, other theologians, and the theories of Erik Erikson and Abraham Maslow ground this thesis. Congregational interviews and Parish Project Group conversations serve as primary tools to discern relevant concerns. Confident in the preemptive power of biblical preaching, the project leader proposes that God's word, faithfully prepared and communicated, is essential to the continuing health of a church's spiritual immune system. The project thus argues for the strategic deployment of biblical texts that sensitize a congregation and her leaders to the inevitability of conflict while equipping them to address conflict redemptively in its early rather than later stages. The project thus proposes to train a new senior pastor and his key leaders in the homiletical skills essential to effective biblical preaching. During this project, the pastor and each leader-participant will be equipped to prepare and present one sermon to their congregation on the subject of biblical admonition, each developed from select biblical texts undergirding this project. Participants will also prepare a second sermon from the following areas of study: God's covenant nature, the priesthood of all believers, an organic view of the Church as community, the Holy Spirit's role in healthy community life, and the Lord's Supper as a strategic window into biblical forgiveness. These sermons further seek to encourage healthy theological reflection accompanied by practical obedience to the texts expressed in a corporate recommitment to the practice of restorative admonition. A church's response to the certainty of human failure within her ranks impacts the credibility of her witness to Christ's forgiveness with those outside the believing community. It proposes a scriptural hermeneutical method founded on John Wesley's sermon construct in using the preaching moment of the worship service to teach this 'love and demand' construct as a method to interpret Scripture.  The method was successful in teaching Wesley's preaching construct as a scriptural interpretive model.  The evaluation demonstrated that hearers in the focus group learned to identify the love and demand of God in the text. Chapter 1 introduces this preaching project and the ministry context of First Baptist Church, Camden, Arkansas.  Chapter 2 identifies five types of illustrations used in the Bible.  They are an anecdote, a historical event, parables, Scripture, and visual aids.  Chapter 3 moves from the Bible to the preaching of today.  The first part of chapter 3 identifies types of preaching illustrations. Part two gives examples of sources of illustrations, and part three summarizes the illustration techniques and practices of five famous Christian preachers.  Chapter 4 is a week-by-week account of my 1 Peter preaching project.  It includes pre-sermon series questionnaires, individual sermon questionnaires, and post-sermon series questionnaires.  Chapter 5 is an evaluation of the entire project.  Data is analyzed.  The process is critiqued. The research of expository preaching was followed by the preparation of a series of sermons based on the model of expository preaching.  The project director then delivered these sermons to the congregation of Berean Baptist Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma. A survey was conducted primarily to test whether a critical and contextual biblical hermeneutical process would improve the quality of the group's homiletic experience--especially a greater forging of Christian praxis. One strategy is intentionally to preach these long books in multiple series with significant calendar breaks.  This is motivated by a commitment to the inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of the Scriptures and to regularly preaching expositional series.  This project involved preaching Romans as a model of this non-sequential strategy.  In addition, twenty-six preaching pastors were surveyed and multiple group evaluations were held as Romans was preached. The categories for this descriptive analysis include their homiletic structures, strategies for interpreting the Bible and its uptake in the delivery of a sermon, and observations concerning actual sermon delivery.  Having analyzed and described these styles of preaching, the project author further engages them through an exercise of replication whereby these particular styles are imitated in sermons composed by the project author and preached to a congregation-based focus group.
