These lay leaders are required to go through a course of education prior to assuming their office. The exact nature of that training is not made explicit in the church's constitution, so it is left to each congregation to discern a program that will prepare their ruling elders for faithful service. This mandated moment is an opportunity for positive spiritual growth. But many of the approaches to this task have relied on a heavily didactic method that focuses on transferring information, rather than a devotional method which focuses on spiritual formation. What is offered here is entitled 'Prayerful preparation: Elder education as spiritual formation.' As happiness had been experienced while seeking wholeness, so I came to develop a program of recovering the image of God using the process. Based on a model of seven dimensions of Clinebell, ten practical methods of promoting the holistic growth were ironed out. These models are easy to use for everyone because they are related to loving God and one's neighbors. The problem that this project addressed is that there is currently no general understanding of how current faith develpment research can be used to promote the spiritual development of children who are raised in Harmony. The six key areas of spiritual growth identified in these interviews are: relationship with parents, relationships with peers, relationship with significant adults, search for identity, transformative life events, and God's activity. This project tested the process of intentionally utilizing spiritual practices such as prayer, scripture reading, journaling and group reflection as a part of short term mission trips to strengthen spiritual growth among participants. Participatory Action Research was the primary research method employed for the development of a reflection guide and follow-up interviews with volunteers in mission. The writer assumes that learning and using scripture stories for our own meaning-making is foundational to Christian formation. Bible stories are only one tool among many for a preacher. But without the stories, there is not much for a preacher to draw upon with regards to telling a gospel metanarrative, offering a Biblical allusion or intertextual resonance. The thesis explores the preacher's process of study and sermon-writing, both hermeneutical and homiletical, and poses questions to consider in preaching narrative texts.
