Scripture, church history, and liturgical traditions document the primacy of parental involvement. Parents, however, reveal confusion and discomfort with mentoring roles. This thesis project created a survey to examine experiences of Episcopal Church school parents whose children were involved in Communion preparation. The thesis project revealed an improved level of parental comfort having had the opportunity o reflect and reclaim their faith development. Participants in the eight-week study used material from Henry and Richard Blackaby's Spiritual leadership: moving people on to God's agenda. A pre and post study survey developed datas for comparison. The data indicated the participants' needs to cross generational lines to aid in their spiritual transformation. How do pastors build up God-centered disciples today? Moving away from self-centeredness toward God-centeredness is the most important goal of this ministry project. A God-centeredness curriculum was designed and implemented in a local church context. The project involved a select group in a deepening process of self-exploration, meditation on God's Word, and contemplative commitment to God's way. There appears to be a catalytic relationship between spiritual conversations and the spiritual health of church leaders. Church leaders find a safe place for discerning God's healing initiative through spiritual direction. To ascertain the impact of spiritual direction upon the church leader's spiritual formation, sixteen pastors and program staff received monthly spiritual direction for twelve months. Ninety-four percent reported aspects of spiritual growth. As happiness had been experienced while seeking wholeness, so I came to develop a program of recovering the image of God using the process. Based on a model of seven dimensions of Clinebell, ten practical methods of promoting the holistic growth were ironed out. These models are easy to use for everyone because they are related to loving God and one's neighbors. The problem that this project addressed is that there is currently no general understanding of how current faith develpment research can be used to promote the spiritual development of children who are raised in Harmony. The six key areas of spiritual growth identified in these interviews are: relationship with parents, relationships with peers, relationship with significant adults, search for identity, transformative life events, and God's activity. This thesis-project employs proactive research methods to accomplish its objectives. Chapter one identifies the problem of not properly understanding the nature, place and role of Christian formation and describes the ministry context of Beverly Heights Presbyterian Church. Chapter two examines the biblical foundation for Christian formation and chapter three explores its theological framework. This project tested the process of intentionally utilizing spiritual practices such as prayer, scripture reading, journaling and group reflection as a part of short term mission trips to strengthen spiritual growth among participants. Participatory Action Research was the primary research method employed for the development of a reflection guide and follow-up interviews with volunteers in mission.
