The supposition of the project was that a crisis exists in North American society regarding the capacity of young adult males to develop toward authentic manhood. The project's thesis was that training young adult males in spiritual disciplines would help them progress toward spiritual maturity and authentic manhood. Through this project the director taught participants how to practice six spiritual disciplines. The writer assumes that learning and using scripture stories for our own meaning-making is foundational to Christian formation. Bible stories are only one tool among many for a preacher. But without the stories, there is not much for a preacher to draw upon with regards to telling a gospel metanarrative, offering a Biblical allusion or intertextual resonance. The thesis explores the preacher's process of study and sermon-writing, both hermeneutical and homiletical, and poses questions to consider in preaching narrative texts. Implementation was the main qualitative research method used. The main objective was to implement five different components into the small group ministry with the hope that group participation would increase to a percentage which reflected Central Church's stated vision that small groups were an important way to connect. The congregation was surveyed using the REVEAL Spiritual Life Survey. The researcher then led a strategic planning process to clarify the purpose, vision, values, and direction of the church. Changes were implemented based on survey data and group input before the same survey was administered again. But what does that change look like in the life of a believer? How is that changed developed? What part does the church play in the process of transformation? This dissertation explores the relationship between what pastors believe about personal transformation and how they approach the spiritual development of parishioners. While considering the wisdom of current writers and researchers, the study focuses on the thought and practice of 50 churches in the San Francisco Bay area of California and more specifically on five sample churches that are creatively exploring how to develop believers to spiritual maturity. The study concludes that there is a great need for a clearly articulated theology of change and for ministry designs that bring that theology to life. This dissertation is intended to contribute to the larger, ongoing conversation of spiritual formation.
