What we truly think shapes our decisions and our behavior. Over the last two decades, cognitive scientists have developed a strong body of research to argue that whenever we think about abstract concepts, such as Spiritual growth, we use metaphors to think with. And while metaphors enable us to think about abstractions; they also shape our thinking about those abstractions. Evangelical preachers, by and large, give their listeners performance-based metaphors for thinking about their interactions with God. Sermon applications typically emphasize 'steps to attain X'--where 'X' is the goal for that particular sermon. This activates a ladder or staircase metaphor in their listeners' thinking--a metaphor that emphasizes effort. By understanding how metaphors work, how metaphors shape our thinking, and Jesus' metaphors, Evangelical preachers can develop sermon applications that will assist, rather than hinder, their listener's Spiritual growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130732781895680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:36:17.180Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:03:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:08:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8167c9ae-f693-4700-a1aa-e737a82bcb28","accessControl_ssim":["c94af283-2e8e-4e71-9c54-3acf22eab8e2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Child play: a paradigm for adult faith shaping"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:03:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:56:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dd94c7e5-850d-4ad6-b3a5-413ed6f474b4"],"hasLease_ssim":["3508a3c9-de8e-488c-a259-5a3880bc0a0c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald L Griggs"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Stephen Anderson"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Faith development","Play"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The understanding of the dynamics of children's play offers a helpful paradigm for experiencing and interacting with God. In doing so, the influence of culture, both past and present, is considered. The church, due in part to the influence of modernism, has approached discipleship in a 'consumer driven' fashion. Churches tend to function as religious cafeterias, focusing on the perceived needs and wants of religious consumers. Generally, discipleship in the local church has become haphazard and unintentional in regards to process and outcome. The author offers an approach that is integrated, simple, and biblical. The approach advocates the integration of the three components of intentional teaching, relating, and experiencing in every program of the local church, so as to efficiently promote Christian formation in the lives of believers in a balanced, holistic way. Scripture and the practices of the ancient church support an integrated, holistic approach to Christian formation. The three components of intentional teaching, relating, and are included as central elements of the spiritual maturation process in the Old and New Testaments, as well as in the early church. These components form the core of the integrated strategy. The results of the study enable churches to address two primary issues regarding Christian formation First, from the church's point of view, every program or meeting offered by the church becomes an agent of spiritual growth. Intentional teaching, authentic relationships, and meaningful experiences are employed in different ways in different settings, but the people are purposefully exposed to Christian discipleship at every level of church programming. Second, from the believer's perspective, every person involved in churches using this strategy are able to grow spiritually in an environment that is biblical, balanced, and efficient. Biblical spiritual growth provides a firm foundation for life. A strategy that is balanced enables believers to see the inherent authenticity that Christianity brings to all of life. An efficient strategy enables believers to grow spiritually while being good stewards of their time. The church has a responsibility to enable believers to engage in biblical, balanced spiritual growth, but the church must do so without becoming the center of attention. The believer's focus must remain on God and neighbor so as to worship whole-heartedly and minister faithfully."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129760977387520,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:20:50.394Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:49:02Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:05:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8581c6ce-b8c1-4afb-851a-407dad123720","accessControl_ssim":["0103eb5f-7370-480f-bc50-36d7defeb622"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Implementing a spiritual development strategy for adult young believers at Leawood Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:48:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:03:55Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9ee887b0-faee-4c31-bb6b-968973af0af1"],"hasLease_ssim":["be4ef867-233a-4f6d-8c79-d6a2f5bc93fc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["J D Payne"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gregory S Love"],"publisher_tesim":["Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Young adults--Religious life","Faith development","Spiritual formation","Spiritual exercises","Leawood Baptist Church (Memphis, Tenn)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project provides a plan for adult young believers grow spiritually by providing a way to respond in life. The project was motivated in large part by the lack of attention to the arts in conservative, evangelical churches in America. Two groups from such a church, Circleville First Baptist Church in Ohio, completed this seven-session study in early 2004. Simultaneously, the author preached a sermon series utilizing art entitled Finding Beauty in the Bible. The response to the use of art and the principles regarding genuine beauty was overwhelmingly positive."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e59d8a7f-b140-41e1-9d1f-4e98aaa1d973"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132611710550016,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:06:09.066Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":224,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
