Twenty adults who are mentally handicapped, as well as the congregation, participated in the project activities. The research instruments included interviews and questionnaires. Four formation sessions were conducted as an attempt to discover and address the faith needs of each person, followed by four worship services addressing those needs. The project was designed to contribute to the effectiveness of the ministry of the participating pastors by creating a caring, supportive community of peers.  Chapters two and three examined the biblical and historical foundations.  The biblical models of covenant and community were the primary foci.  Sketches of several leading theologians were presented in order to understand how support systems in spiritual growth have functioned effectively at significant times in the history of the Christian church.  Chapter four described the preparation for a implementation of the program.  Data was gatherd through questionnaires and interviews. The group design and various options for continuing support in spiritual growth were presented. Interviews with committee members provided subjective analysis of the entire project.  The goals were accomplished.
