This study began with a survey of biblical and professional literature that examined the divine paradigm for marriage, the stressors associated with ministry, and critical steps couples took to create a more amicable, enduring relationship. Next, the project gleaned information from a survey distributed to couples who have been married for at least thirty years and have served in the pastorate. The project director compiled, synthesized, and reported the results. The conclusions drawn affirm that God's marital construct can and will endure the stressors of ministry when couples apply biblical principles. This report is intended to bring encouragement to pastoral couples who are fighting the good fight. This project determined the most significant issues that pastors and families of forced exits need to address after they leave their church and during the time of transition. This project used interviews and questionnaires of leaders of ministries who work regularly with pastors of forced exits. Ten issues were identified as being the most important issues for pastors of forced exits to address. He studied resilence literature, conducted personal interviews with chaplains, and collected data/responses from an online survey. He learned that incorporating intentional self-care practices that nurture the body, mind, and spirit may reduce the risk of burnout and compassion fatigue, while lowering the impact of secondary traumatic stress. The amount of time the minister spent with his family in various ways contributed towards the connectedness the family feels with him. The minister and his wife must set and communicate realistic standards to the children. Teamwork between the parents in approaching tasks in the home, and respecting the volition of the mother lead to the wife and children's sense of the minister supporting the wife. Respect must be shown to all, by all. I developed this project as a retreat experience based upon the Healing care groups curriculum as developed by Terry Wardle.  Six goals were developed to measure the degree to which this project was successful. Of the seventy-two evangelical and non-evangelical clergy couples who completed the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) and the Index of Marital Satisfaction (IMS) self-tests, the main issues of concern identified were: financial, religious, and affectional. With minimal seminar and follow-up participation, after these self-tests, the Transtheoretical model developed by Prochaska and Norcross (2003) was incorporated. African-American ministers are not immune to these pressures. They face difficulties due to external racial conflicts as well as internal challenges from their congregations due to racial expectations. There is a breach in the ministry that some African-American ministers seem to have overlooked; it is their family. While it is clear that many African-American ministers and their families are walking with God and standing tall in their respective ministries, many are failing, causing a ripple effect in their churches, communities, and homes.
