This project focuses on the challenges of pastoral responsibilities and family life, using the writer's personal experiences, discussions with other pastors and literature review, thus following the descriptive methodology.  The research revealed that because of the need to fulfill what is expected of them, pastors find less time for their family and personal development.  It further found that spouses and children feel neglected and abandoned for church work and therefore, need more of the pastor's presence in the home. In 1989 questionnaires were distributed to ninety-nine United Methodist clergywomen and seminary students in southern New England.  Twenty-nine were returned completed.  Six interviews were conducted. Unstructured interviews with Lutheran clergy mothers were examined using feminist historical critique, Bowenian family system theory, and Luther's concept of vocation. Clergy mothers as 'symptom-bearers' and 'spirit-bearers' are challenging the church to healthier and more faithful definition of ministry, community and vocation. The survey information shaped the design of a pre-relocation package and post-relocation retreat offered clergy families. This project aided the process of understanding, support, acceptance, and direction for remarried clergy couples. The pastor can more effectively serve the local parish when the parish undertakes an intentional and supportive role in ministering personally to the pastor and the pastor's family.  The method of study included securing support resources for clergy and their families from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and conducting a four-session workshop for clergy and clergy families. Some presbyteries have begun experimental programs in which personnel are available to counsel clergy and their families.  These persons have no administrative functions that might influence the future career of the clergy. A survey compared members of a Presbytery with such a Pastor-to-Clergy Families program and members of a presbytery which has only an Executive Presbyter. Results failed to confirm the hypothesis.
