To be known requires respect and understanding of their communities’ pastoral needs and religious practices.  Sadly, many leaders have a colonial mentality that foments stereotypes and even prejudice toward Hispanics. The only way to move beyond this mentality is to sincerely enter into relationships with Latino(a)s, and understand how they see themselves.  This respectful understanding must begin with our Church leaders. Latino/as want to share their cultural and religious practices that connect them to their families and ancestors. Although the Hispanic Catholics play a vital role in the life of the Church, barriers to inclusion remain. Hispanic Catholics want to fully participate in the Church’s mission to serve the whole community.  They are eager to share their gifts through collaborative service in their parishes.\r\n\r\nIn this thesis project I reveal Hispanic communities that are already present but not often seen. I introduce their religious practices to the larger community including church leaders. I focus on the religious practice called Adoración Nocturna Mexicana (Mexican Nocturnal Adoration). A practice where members of the Mexican Catholic communities spend the night in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar where, like all Catholics, they worship the true presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated hosts reposited in the Tabernacle and exposed in the monstrance on the altar during nocturnal adoration vigil. The study shows how Hispanics have historically and are presently practicing nocturnal adoration as part of their popular religious practices.  More importantly, I explore what drives them toward these religious practices. By listening to their stories, I have heard their heartfelt voices as they express their needs and desires, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. I also demonstrate how they emulate the Samaritan woman at the well (John: 4-42), and like her are moved to evangelization when they also come to the realization of being known and therefore loved by Christ. \r\n\r\nI delve into the pastoral, social, and theological dimensions of Hispanic popular Catholicism and devotional practices, referred to as Santo praxis and lo cotidiano (the everyday).  \r\n\r\nThe goal is to demonstrate how popular religious devotion is forged in the historical struggles of people who are oppressed. The research included books, other ministries, and students and young adults in the ministry setting who continue to be active in their faith.\r\n\r\nThe next step was developing a curriculum to equip selected parents of Judson Baptist Church, Walker, Louisiana, in faith transmission skills. The curriculum came from the research conducted in the previous step. To help me gain skills in curriculum writing, I completed the book Design for Teaching and Training by LeRoy Ford. The new skills, combined with the knowledge gained from the research, resulted in a curriculum.\r\n\r\nThe last step was equipping selected parents of Judson Baptist Church, Walker, Louisiana, in faith transmission skills. The parents were taught using cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning. Tools to be used in incorporating the domains of learning were pre- and posttests, role-playing, and a follow-up Christian families are losing children to the world at a startling pace. The question of who is responsible for the discipleship of children does not receive enough attention. In practice, churches have looked to serve families by performing this function. This research addresses parents’ roles and responsibilities. Among Christians, there can be an inconsistency between doctrine and practice. Children are abandoning Christianity later in life, and many parents are struggling to fulfill their call to nurture their children in the faith. A multitude of measures are being undertaken by faithful congregations to avert the crisis in families. Genesis 1, Deuteronomy 6, Psalm 78, Ephesians 6, and the Pastoral Epistles lay the expectation that parents will function as the primary disciple makers for children. With the concept of sphere sovereignty and more, Abraham Kuyper offers unique insights into this conversation. After examining the current literature and models for family ministry in churches, the field research explores the ministry models of three particular churches on this issue. Each ministry model brings unique biblical approaches in their endeavor to ensure the faith “once for all delivered to saints” is passed to succeeding generations. Each model also faces challenges unique to the approach they have adopted. This research proposes a new “Every Square Inch” discipleship model. The model enables the family and the church to carry out their respective roles while avoiding abrogating the responsibilities given to other parties. Like other immigrants, Chinese families in North America experience more family problems than usual because of the complications brought about by migration. To develop a theology of family for the Chinese immigrant families in North America, three functions and three characteristics of family structure that are relevant to the context of their situation are incorporated. The family functions are procreation, stabilizing community, and individuation; the characteristics are adaptability to change, commitment to interdependence, and tolerance of diversity. These functions and characteristics are interrelated.This project concluded with the suggestion of a two-pronged approach in family ministry. First, the church is to intentionally apply a family perspective in everything that it does, be it worship, Christian education, Christian care, or mission. Will these three often disparate pieces weave together into new understandings that can improve the pastor's own functioning? This project is designed to begin to answer these questions.Chapter One presents the history of the development of Murray Bowen's Family Systems Theory and the eight main concepts of this theory. Chapter Two will be an in-depth examination of my family of origin which will discuss the patterns of family functioning I discovered as I completed my family genogram, similar to a family tree.Chapter Three will briefly examine the history of one of the congregations I served in an attempt to discover the roots of that particular congregation's functioning. Chapter Four will be an in-depth examination of the biblical account of the patriarch Jacob/Israel.Chapter Five will integrate these three elements, my family story, the congregational story, and the biblical story, to demonstrate how the common elements that existed in all three of these stories led to a 'Eureka' moment for my life and ministry. In 1 Corinthians 12:12-26, Romans 12:3-5, and Ephesians 4:4-5 the apostle Paul describes the connection Christians have with one another as being like a body. Through Jesus Christ, Christians are all connected in this body, the body of Christ. Between 1950 and 1960, Murray Bowen began to develop an integrative theory of the family which he called “family systems theory” (FST). FST describes the family as one emotional unit rather than a collection of autonomous people. The theory describes humans as living in relationships with emotional connections. These connections pass the anxiety of family members to each member of the family system along interconnected pathways. This idea was a departure from the linear causation theories espoused at the time Bowen proposed his theory. Bowen described anxiety—defined in this project as a reaction to a threat that is real or imagined—as existing in two foundational forms, chronic and acute. Chronic anxiety can be passed through family generations and often shows up in recurring generational patterns and similarities. Although family systems theory was developed based on the assumption that humans are a product of evolution, this project has shown the connection between FST and biblical doctrines and theology. This project has shown that FST can be a valuable tool for Pastors and parents as they observe their congregation or family’s emotional reactivity. For many immigrants adjusting to life in the United States, in which their children have had to adjust to life in a whole new culture, it is often the case that they have not been able to pay much attention to their children's lives. Now, these parents face the problem of communicating to and discipling children that have grown up in a completely different language and culture—having been assimilated to the culture and having been educated in the United States growing up with a completely different set of values from their parents' generation. As such, problems and conflicts within Korean immigrant families in the United States continue to grow. For Christians, the problems they face often find their children leaving their homes and leaving their churches.
